Mapping

This is a compass rose.  It is a design on a map that shows directions.  The four directions we will learn about are north, east, south, and, west.

We can remember the names and order of the directions by thinking about the mnemonic device Never Eat Shredded Wheat.  Each word in that phrase starts with the same letter as a direction.

This is a map of the world.

This is a map of our country, Canada.

This is a map of our province, British Columbia.

Cardinal Directions

A Key With No Lock
By Cherry Carl

Every map has a special key
So you know what is earth and what is the sea.
Oceans and rivers and lakes are blue,
But I know that and so do you!
Trees and grass are usually green,
On every map that I’ve ever seen!
Roads and freeways are easy signs . . .
They’re usually marked with big black lines.
Every map has a special key,
So, when you look, you’ll always see
Symbols and signs that help you read.
